SmallPacking list suggestions:

A flashlight or headlamp
Light-weight, fast drying clothing
Towel
Raincoat or umbrella (May-Nov)
Sunblock
Insect repellant
Sealable bags (e.g. ziplock) for documents, etc
Work gloves
A mosquito net for your bunk
Travel alarm clock for early rising
Beach wear

Note: Many volunteers choose to bring a device with which to access wifi at local hot spots, though doing so is at your own risk.

How to get to El Centro Verde:

We recommend flying into the closest airport in Liberia, Costa Rica (airport code LIR). Flying into San Jose (SJO) will often require overnight stays in the capital city. It’s a good idea to change some of your currency into local colones at the airport right away for bus fares. The exchange rate is currently about 500 colones to 1 US dollar.

General recommendations for bus transport: Check your main bag with the driver before boarding, you will be given a baggage claim receipt. A day pack, and/or all your valuables and important documents, should never leave your sight and preferably should be on your lap at all times, especially if you nap on the bus.

From Liberia (airport code LIR) by bus:

You can take a taxi or a bus from the airport to the bus station, Liberia Terminal local. Buses leave the airport about every hour, near the hour. You can also wait out on the highway at a bus stop on the same side as the airport. Note: the bus schedule on Sundays is reduced.

The bus company, Transportes La Pampa, has a route from Liberia Terminal local to Santa Cruz every 45 minutes. The ride is about an hour and a half. Once in Santa Cruz, we recommend taking a quick taxi to the Alfaro station. The walk is about 15 minutes but can be cumbersome with luggage.

At the Mercado station, you will look for a bus to Playa Junquillal or Playa Negra. Either bus will work and buses depart from Santa Cruz every couple hours. You will pay the approximately 1 thousand colones fare to the driver when you de-board at El Centro Verde (el vivero a mano derecha antes de Paraíso). The last bus leaves Santa Cruz at 5:30 pm. You can also take a taxi from Santa Cruz to El Centro Verde. This takes about 45 minutes and costs approximately $30.00.

At El Centro Verde, walk up the gravel drive about 150 meters to Tom’s house, the second wooden house at the end. If no one is around, make yourself at home.

From San Jose (airport code SJO) by bus/taxi:

There are two bus companies which have service to Santa Cruz.

The bus company Alfaro, drives from San José to Santa Cruz on a daily basis. Alfaro phone numbers are 506-2222-2750 or 506-2223-8229. Buses leave San José every two hours during the day and charge approximately 8 thousand colones per person. By bus it takes approximately 5 hours from San José to Santa Cruz. You will have a rest/bathroom break about half way. The Alfaro route is over the Tempisque bridge and is the quickest.

Tralapa also has buses to Santa Cruz. The route is longer and they arrive at a different station, see above for getting from one station to another. Note: the 2:00 pm bus goes directly from San Jose, stops in Santa Cruz and continues on to Paraiso, passing directly in front of El Centro Verde around 8:30 pm. (Please let us know if you are coming on this bus at 2658-8018, in order to meet you at the road.)
