El Centro Verde provides technical assistance, nursery services, and general support for Restoring Our Watershed (ROW), a U.S. non-profit organization with the mission to protect and renew the Nandamojo river basin, the 29,000-acre ecosystem in which ECV resides.
During a series of university-level courses hosted by ECV from 2005 to 2007, a group of concerned stakeholders studied the significant environmental challenges the watershed faces. They found that the watershed has been severely degraded by shortsighted land use practices and formed ROW in response.
Beginning in the middle of the twentieth century, large swaths of the valley’s dry tropical forest were to create cattle pastures. This dramatic change altered the Nandamojo’s ecosystem, as the valley lost much of its capacity to absorb and infiltrate water during Guanacaste’s six-month rainy season. Rivers that once ran year-round are now dry for several months at a time, and seasonal flooding has increased in intensity. Soil fertility has declined due to the erosion of denuded hillsides and monocrop cultivation.
ROW’s vision is to foster a sustainable balance between human and natural economies in the watershed. To achieve that vision, ROW hopes to promote the use of green technologies developed at ECV throughout the valley so that families have the tools and knowledge needed to revitalize their land.
